Altima Fenders
A fender, often known as fender flares, is the panel found on the sides of the vehicle located in the front of the doors. Some quarter panels are integrated with the fascia while some are stand alone panels. Minor automotive accidents often are called fender benders, since an impact to a vehicle's bumper and grille often will bend the sheet metal at the edge of a fender. Some fenders are also ergonomically designed to avoid wind resistance and make the vehicle more aerodynamic. Some have extended fender designs to avoid mud splashes and road debris hits.
Certain types of cars, such as the Lotus Seven, Allard, and Caterham Seven, use what are called cycle fenders in the US or cycle wings in Britain, for their resemblance to those used on bicycles. This was popular on early trials cars because the fenders were light and would not clog the wheelwells with mud. They persist on cars wanting a "vintage" look.
Fenders are usually made from sheet metal steel, but can be made from a number of other materials. Fiberglass is a popular material for fenders in some makes of car. Plastics have also been used, as well as carbon fiber. The advantage of using these non-ferrous materials is that they do not rust. They also weigh much less, allowing a sleeker car design. However, they can sustain damage more readily, but repairs are relatively easy to carry out if the damage is not too extensive. They are also lighter this way, so there is an increase in performance. The majority of fenders, however, continue to be made from metal as that offers the best protection in the event of a collision.
